A Fond Farewell

The Cruising News team were yesterday shocked as we heard news of a dear colleague Steve Read, passing away.

Steve died aged just 54, at his Hampshire home of a heart attack in early February. Steve was a wonderfully spirited fellow and had been working with us since November. Steve was a huge supporter of what we were trying to achieve, always on hand in the early stages to offer advice and regaling us with his cruise stories. Read more »

Oceania notices UK potential

“The UK could be on par with North America in just a few short years, offering a Cruise for just about anyone” and Oceania have certainly taken note.

Following her debut in January 2011, Oceania Cruises’ first new-build luxury cruise ship Marina, will offer two cruises in summer 2011 as part of her inaugural European cruise season. After which she will be returning to her winter destination of the Caribbean. Oceania will also offer three further ex-UK cruises, from Dover and Greenwich, on board the stunning luxury cruise ships Regatta and Insignia. Read more »

A Grand Day for Southampton and P&O

Here in the Cruising News office, nothing pleases us more than to hear of cruise lines supporting the UK cruise market. So when P&O made their most recent announcement, it had to be top of our to “tell you” list.

P&O Cruises have announced details of “The Grand Event” on July 3, 2012, Part of year of celebrations, the entire fleet of seven ships will be docked together in its home port of Southampton for the first time in the company’s history. Read more »

Another Cancellation for Bahrain

After another weekend of unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, Bahrain has cancelled it’s remaining 2011 cruises.

Although not due to end until late April, officials in Bahrain have decided it is in their best interest to cancel all remaining scheduled visits, Once again leaving many cruise passengers disappointed. According to News Reports, unless travel advisories from the Italian and German governments change imminently, there will be no further calls from two Costa ships.

The British Foreign Office continues to advise against “all but essential travel” to Bahrain. Bahrain was one of the first countries in the Middle East to experience demonstrations, influences by the protests which started in Tunisia and Egypt. Read more »

P&O Tops UK Poll

P&O Cruises have achieved a place in the top 10 best performing companies in the Institute of Customer Service (ICS) UK Customer Satisfaction Index (UKCSI).

Auckland awaits new Queen

Cunard’s latest ocean liner, Queen Elizabeth, will be welcomed by excited on-lookers in Auckland when  she makes her maiden visit to the city tomorrow. 

Cunard’s latest luxury liner will enter the harbour at around 6am and then berth at Princes Wharf around 7am.  She is currently midway through her 103-night maiden world voyage, and will call at the Bay of Islands before arriving in Auckland tomorrow, 18th February 2011. The Queen Elizabeth will spendi the day in port and depart just before midnight to sail on to Wellington.

UK cruise port war continues

Although it was Valentine’s day yesterday, there still appears to be no love loss between UK cruise port’s Southampton and Liverpool.

Valentine’s Day was the date for Itchen MP John Denham to meet with ABP (Associated British Ports) to discuss Liverpool’s bid to become a new cruise terminus. Mr Denham has said he feels Liverpool is “trying its luck” again even though they have had a previous bid thrown out by the last government. The bid was turned down by the previous government as it had already received £21m of public money. Read more »

Royal Caribbean with abundance of caution

Royal Caribbean and sister brand Azamara Club Cruises are the latest cruise lines to cancel port calls in Egypt, as the political turmoil in the country continues.

TTG live’s Sophie Griffiths, has reported this morning how Royal Caribbean International have cancelled all planned calls in Egypt through to the end of June.

The company said in a statement: “Royal Caribbean International has been closely monitoring the situation in Egypt. In an abundance of caution, we have decided to cancel our upcoming port calls to Egypt through June.” Read more »
